17507LCAccidentsHappenBlogWD-(1).pngIt can happen to anyone. No matter how careful you are behind the wheel, hazardous driving conditions or other negligent drivers on the road can cause an accident. Considering there are nearly 6 million vehicle accidents each year in the U.S., it’s important that you and your employees know the steps to take after an accident occurs.

Tips in case one happens to you

Safety first
Call 911 to report any injuries and request police and first responders to the scene.

Stay calm
Don’t accuse the other driver of causing the accident. You don’t know what type of personality you may be dealing with. Introduce yourself from a safe distance and speak calmly and politely. If the other driver leaves the scene, don’t try to stop them, but get the license plate number and remain at the scene. Leaving the scene is illegal in most states, so do not make a bad situation worse.

Move away from the vehicles
Wait for the police before you move your car, unless it’s blocking traffic. If it is, drive to the shoulder, as long as your vehicle isn’t leaking fluid. DO NOT stand between or near the cars while discussing the crash. If another driver isn’t paying attention, they could possibly collide with the cars, crushing you in between them.

Collect information for your records
Exchange information with the other driver. Write down their address, insurance information including the policy number and expiration date, and the other driver’s license plate number. It’s also helpful to take pictures of anything that may have contributed to the crash.

If you believe there are witnesses to the accident, take their names and phone numbers for the police to have when writing their accident reports.
